What to Wear in a Sauna: Why Choose Natural Fibres Over Synthetic Swimwear?

When you think about what to wear in a sauna, a swimsuit probably comes to mind.

But pause for a moment: you're not swimming. So why dress for the pool?

A sauna is a completely different environment. Your body is surrounded by heat, you're sweating, your skin is warm and your clothing is sitting directly against it.

At FLOS, we believe what we put next to our skin deserves a little more thought — particularly when we're asking our bodies to slow down, detox and reset.

So, if you prefer to wear something in the sauna, we think there's a beautiful alternative to reaching automatically for your usual synthetic swimsuit: natural fibres.

Cotton, hemp and other pure natural materials can offer a more considered way to dress for the sauna — while taking you effortlessly from sauna to sea, lake or cold plunge afterwards.

1. Your skin is your largest organ — and what touches it matters

Your skin is your body's largest organ and it sits between you and the outside world.

In the sauna, that relationship becomes even more noticeable. As your body heats up, you sweat, and the environment between your skin and your clothing changes too.

Heat, moisture, friction and the fabric itself can all affect how comfortable your skin feels.

This is one reason lightweight, breathable clothing is often recommended in hot conditions, particularly for people prone to skin irritation.

So when you're sitting in intense heat, it makes sense to think about what you're asking your skin to sit against.

2. Why dress for the pool if you're not swimming?

This is the question that started a lot of our thinking around sauna wear.

Most of us have been conditioned to think: water = synthetic swimsuit.

But a sauna isn't a swimming pool.

You're not trying to glide through water, increase hydrodynamics or create a high-performance garment that holds its shape after hours of swimming.

You're sitting, breathing, sweating, resting.

So why not choose something designed around that experience?

A lightweight cotton or hemp bikini can give you the coverage you want while feeling much more at home in a warm environment.

And if your sauna session ends with a plunge, a swim or a dip in the sea, you're already wearing something that can come with you.

Sauna → dip in the water → sunbathe or repeat.

3. Hemp + cotton: a natural combination for the sauna

This is where hemp and cotton come together.

Both are natural, breathable fibres, but each brings something different to the fabric. Cotton is soft and naturally absorbent, while hemp is known for its strength and durability.

Together, they create a fabric that feels considered against the skin while being able to move with you from one environment to another.

And that's exactly what we love about natural fibres: they don't need to be engineered for every possible activity to have a place in our lives.

Think about the sauna ritual.

You arrive in the heat.

You sweat.

You step outside.

Maybe you take a cold plunge. Maybe you swim in a lake. Then you sit in the sunshine and let your body warm up again.

Your clothing comes along for the whole ritual.

A hemp and cotton bikini makes sense here because it isn't designed exclusively for one moment. It's for the sauna, the swim, the sun and everything in between.

There's also something about natural fibres that feels particularly at home in the sauna.

Wood. Stone. Water. Skin. Earth.

Hemp and cotton belong in that picture.

5. From sauna to sea: choosing clothes for the whole ritual

Perhaps the biggest reason we love natural-fibre sauna wear is that the sauna doesn't have to be an isolated activity.

It's part of a ritual.

A slow morning.

A sauna in the woods.

A cold plunge.

A swim in the sea.

Sun on your skin.

We don't necessarily want a different technical garment for every one of those moments.

Our bikinis aren't designed solely for swimming. They're designed to become part of a slower way of living — wherever the day takes you.
